The PC building/exploring/whatevering phenomenon Minecraft has updated to Beta version 1.4 today, bringing with it at least seven new features and tweaks. As previously teased by the developer, version 1.4 adds a new animal to the game: wolves, which can be tamed by giving them a random number of bones until they suddenly dawn a red collar and begin following you around and protecting you from aggressive enemies. There's no limit to the number of wolves you can tame.
Some gameplay tweaks have also been added, particularly the fact that sleeping in a bed will now reset your respawn point to that spot, and that holding the Shift key will let you "grab" onto ladders instead of just slowly sliding down them. That might not sound like much, but in the beautiful-yet-treacherous worlds of Minecraft, any bit of help is appreciated.
Behind the scenes, Minecraft 1.4 has new infrastructure code to support "Statistics lists and Achievements," according to the official changelog, although those features will be fully implemented in the next version.
Minecraft Beta 1.4 is available now, and players will be prompted to update the next time they launch the game.
