After what's seemed like an eternity, Sega today announced that Aliens: Colonial Marines will be out next spring.
The Gearbox-developed shooter was first talked about in 2006 along with an Aliens RPG from Obsidian Entertainment that went on to be canceled. Colonial Marines was planned for release in late 2008 but it kept slipping further and further back. Its supposed 2010 release came and went; Rebellion ended up releasing Aliens vs. Predator in February 2010 instead. The development of Borderlands and its DLC got in the way of Colonial Marines, and Gearbox has also been finishing up Duke Nukem Forever, which will be coming out this month. With all of that out of the way, the developer will apparently now have the time and resources to finally finish up Colonial Marines. If Gearbox is capable of shipping Forever, it can make this happen.
Players will find themselves aboard the U.S.S. Sulaco as a member of the United States Colonial Marines, hence the name. It features authentic environments from the movies (LV-426 and Hadley's Hope are specified) as well as movie-inspired weapons. Gearbox's Randy Pitchford described the game in a press release as being "designed as an interactive successor to the landmark films."
To put any fears to rest that fans of the series may have, Pitchford said on his Twitter account today, "Aliens Colonial Marines is consistent and compatible with the history of events established by the three key films."
Colonial Marines, which is coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, will be on display next week at E3, so definitely look forward to hearing more about the elusive title soon.
The Witcher developer and mastermind behind Good Old Games has some big news coming up just before E3.
Now that The Witcher 2 is finished, patches and DLC notwithstanding, CD Projekt Red is free to turn its attention to other things, such as its next project. The company hasn't yet announced what this is, but there have been indications of the possibility of a console-based Witcher title. We'll find out for sure what the team is working on when it makes a "big announcement" during its CDP Summer Days event in LA on June 2, shortly before E3 starts.
During the event, the company is also planning on discussing the successes of the recent launch of The Witcher 2, and will explain its continuing support for the game with free DLC for registered players and premium expansions.
CD Projekt Red offshoot Good Old Games will also be making an announcement at the event -- an agreement with one of the five remaining big publishers not yet signed up with the digital distribution site. It will be one of Microsoft, LucasArts, EA, Square Enix or Take 2. As part of the event, GOG will announce not only the company but also the first games out of the batch of over 25 titles that it will release over the course of the summer.
You can watch the event live online via CD Projekt Red's Ustream channel. The announcements will start on June 2 at 12pm LA time -- that's 3pm EDT or 7pm GMT.

By Mike Sharkey | Jun 1, 2011 First announced in early 2008, game finally set to arrive in early 2012.Aliens: Colonial Marines just chest-bursted its way out of vaporware limbo. Sega and Gearbox Software announced today that the long in development squad-based first-person shooter will be "the definitive Aliens gaming experience" when it launches in spring 2012.
First announced in February 2008 and scheduled for release in early 2009, Aliens: Colonial Marines appeared to be on Gearbox's back burner as the studio released Borderlands and took on development of Duke Nukem Forever before so much as showing a trailer for Colonial Marines. Now the studio appears ready to fully embrace the game, and it will be on display for the first time at next week's E3 in Los Angeles.
"To Gearbox Software and its peers throughout the industry, Aliens is one of the most influential science fiction properties of all time," Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford said in a statement. "Aliens: Colonial Marines, designed as an interactive successor to the landmark films from Twentieth Century Fox, is a dream project about which our studio is deeply committed and passionate."
The rundown on the game's storyline from Sega:
Aliens: Colonial Marines begins with an ostensibly abandoned ship, the U.S.S. Sulaco, recovered in orbit around LV-426. Players lead a group of highly trained United States Colonial Marines as they board the deserted craft to uncover the fate of the crew. They will have to fight to survive unspeakable horrors and their own anxieties as they chase down the truth behind a galaxy-spanning deception that places humanity at the mercy of the most murderous and deadly species in the universe. Aliens: Colonial Marines features authentic environments, such as the surface of LV-426 and Hadley's Hope, weapons inspired by the film series, and is designed to provide an exhilarating and engaging new chapter in the Aliens universe.
Aliens: Colonial Marines is in development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows PCs. Sega did not get more specific than spring 2012 for a release date. Sharkey says: I envision a game best summed up as "Brothers in Arms in space with Aliens." It's unclear just how tactical Aliens: Colonial Marines will be, but Gearbox certainly has the chops to make it that way. Looking forward to finally seeing the game for the first time at E3. The upcoming release of the only Persona title to never have previously made it to North America is testament to Atlus' dedication to its fans.
A few days ago, Atlus sent out a curious newsletter to its fans. The email, complete with animated 256-color GIF files and far too many exclamation marks, appeared to come from 1997 and made the curious statement that "nothing came out in Japan [that] week." Eagle-eyed observers were quick to spot that, in fact, Persona 2: Innocent Sin came out in the week under discussion, but that the game's controversial themes -- including an appearance from Adolf Hitler -- meant that it never made it over to America.
Now, some 14 years later, Atlus has revealed that yes, it is indeed bringing Persona 2: Innocent Sin to the United States. The new PSP version of the game is the same enhanced version that Japanese players got a short while back, featuring new widescreen graphics, remastered visuals and audio, a remixed musical score (with the option to switch back to the original if you prefer) and a bunch of new quests.
Persona 2's plot is based around the concept of "rumor becoming reality." According to Atlus' description, "when casual gossip suddenly becomes harsh existence, the denizens of Sumaru City realize the bizarre phenomenon can quickly get out of hand and be used to further nefarious agendas."
The game will be with us in the fall of this year. While you wait, you can check out the official website here.

Konami will be publishing Frontier Gate for PSP and Beyond the Labyrinth for 3DS, and they both look pretty cool.
It was just last week when we reported on tri-Ace's experiments with console graphics, but while the demo video wasn't from an actual game, it sure would be nice. However, tri-Ace's next titles are for handhelds, and Konami will be publishing them in Japan sometime in the future.
Beyond the Labryinth (above) is described as a dungeon RPG starring a young girl who seems to be lost, or even looking for something in the game's emponymous labyrinth. No actual gameplay has been revealed, but if the released screenshots are any indicator, this could be one of the more impressive-looking 3DS games so far. There's a definite Ico vibe, as well.
The PSP title Frontier Gate, on the other hand, looks like a more traditional, medieval-style RPG with a multiplayer focus (what PSP RPG doesn't have one these days?). The difference here is that parties can have up to six members split into three pairs, instead of the standard four-person parties in other games of its type. Screenshots suggest some Monster Hunter-style boss encounters as well.
You can visit the official sites/teaser pages for Frontier Gate and Beyond the Labyrinth, both with some nice music to listen to.

Welcome to the Interrogation Room, GameSpy's signature pre-release game coverage format. Here, a GameSpy editor (typically one who's relatively in-the-dark about the game in question) grills his peers for information on a hotly anticipated game -- hopefully with more entertaining results than the typical boilerplate preview would provide. Ryan Scott, Executive Editor: You spent a day at Blizzard, checking out the upcoming StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm expansion. How's it looking?
Eric Neigher, Contributing Editor: It looks... StarCraft II. The graphics aren't any different, if that's what you mean, but I don't think anyone really expected that at all. What also isn't different is the gameplay; although you're now playing as the Zerg (led by Zerg queen Sarah Kerrigan, again), the faction's basic concepts -- from the interstitial scenes between missions, to research and upgrades, to point-and-click mechanics -- are identical to how they were in the original StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. For those expecting a more role-playing-game-ish take on real-time strategy, or an expansion that emphasizes a different angle on StarCraft II's gameplay, this might seem like a disappointment. But the truth is, the game's still so fun, and the two missions I played were so well-designed, that it doesn't really matter. More of a good thing can't be a bad thing... or some... thing.
Ryan Scott: I would imagine that no news is probably pretty good news for hardcore StarCraft players, in terms of major gameplay shakeups (or lack thereof). What's the story with this expansion? What are Kerrigan and the Zerg up to?
Eric Neigher: Blizzard was awfully tight-lipped about the backstory. Kerrigan is obviously back in command of the Zerg, or at least some portion of the Zerg, but how she got herself separated from Jim Raynor and the other Terrans following the events of Wings of Liberty is unclear. Apparently, without Kerrigan, the Zerg have devolved into a semi-feral state, with much infighting and little in the way of direction. Some individual brood queens and overlords have tried to form pockets of organization -- and you take on one of these in one of the missions I played -- but by and large, the Zerg have been decimated. Kerrigan, for her part, doesn't seem much nicer or much less ruthless now that she's back to being (mostly) human. She still treats her underlings like crap, and she's still full of threats and bile, although this time it's mostly directed at Arcturus Mengsk, the main bad guy of the StarCraft universe... so it's hard to tell whether she's on the side of good or evil. It's implied that she intentionally ordered some of these fractured Zerg elements to oppose her before she gave up being Queen of Blades, possibly because she knew she'd be coming back to lead them, and needed to demonstrate her power. But a whole lot was left to the imagination with just the two missions we played.
Ryan Scott: Well, what specifically went on in those two missions? Since you were playing the Zerg, those must have shed some light on what's goin' on...
Eric Neigher: The first mission I played takes place on Char, the Zerg home world, and sees Kerrigan facing off against a rogue brood queen, attempting to reclaim a cache of Zerg eggs that had been stored below the surface prior to the Terrans' takeover of the planet. You and the rival queen compete to get 100 eggs first, with a sub-quest involving getting a bunch of Banelings that you can use to kamikaze your way through your rival's defenses. The other mission takes place on an icy world subject to flash freezes that temporarily lock all units in place on the map, friendly and enemy -- which, in this case, means the Protoss. Neutral yetis attack from time to time, and if you kill enough of them, you can integrate their DNA into the swarm and become immune to the flash freezes, giving you a huge advantage as you try to destroy the Protoss' communication towers before they can warn their home world that Kerrigan is back. Both missions were quite easy, but both also felt fairly early-game and straightforward. Anyone familiar with StarCraft II's mechanics would've had no trouble -- not to say they weren't entertaining, 'cuz they were.
Ryan Scott: What Zerg units did you get to see? Do StarCraft nerds have anything new to look forward to, unit- or tactics-wise?
Eric Neigher: I didn't see any new units, per se, but I got a chance to see some of the upgraded units you get as a result of Heart of the Swarm's DNA recombination gizmo, which pops up between missions. It's effectively identical to the science research that players did to enhance their units in Wings of Liberty, except that you upgrade each unit along a particular two-tiered tree. With Zerglings, for example, you can choose upgrades that make them spawn instantly from larvae, or make them move faster, or give them more hit points. Ultimately, you can choose between two "uber" versions: Swarmlings that spawn three at a time, instead of two, or Raptors, which have a big health bonus and can leap to attack from range. Roaches, too, can be upgraded -- either to Leeches that regenerate life faster when burrowed, or to Prowlers that can move around while burrowed. As in Wings of Liberty, though, these upgraded units are single-player only, but the ability to choose which way you want your swarm to evolve should add some replayability.
Ryan Scott: Well, seems like you got a pretty narrow vertical slice here -- but, all the same, it sounds like everything's mostly unchanged. Did you see any other new stuff? Story characters? Anything? Take us out on something good, Eric!
Eric Neigher: Buddy, I wish I had something new to tell you, but I don't. I will tell you this, though: Sometimes I'm stuck in traffic on my way to work, and I wonder why my company and other companies don't just have different work hours, to minimize traffic and let everyone live a happier life. What I'm saying is, sometimes I feel like a Zergling when I'm caught in traffic, and I think I'd rather be a Protoss. Or a Terran.
